How do I obtain a library card?You would need to complete a membership form to apply for membership. You need to provide a valid identity document together with a proof of your home address (such as a utility bill). Two other contactable addresses are also required registration purposes.If you are applying for a card for a child who is younger than 17, you will need to sign their application form, and include their identity document as well as your own. Do I have to pay for a library card?Not if you live in Cape Town, as your rates support the library. If you lose your card, though, you will have to pay R16. If you live outside the metropolitan boundaries, you may buy a non-resident card for R140 on tariff sheet. This is valid for a year. If you are a visitor to Cape Town, you may obtain a card for R70, and borrow three books.

How many library cards may I have?The City’s library management system is called Brocade and library users may use 1 library card to access all libraries in the City.

Renewing books: Books and magazines can be renewed up to three times. You can renew your books either online or you can renew via telephone if you do not have the time to renew the book in person.

Videos, DVD’s and Special Loans: R6.00 per item per day, maximum R42.00

+ No fines will be charged for overdue items during SA Library Week

++ Librarians-in-Charge may waive fines on written application in certain circumstances beyond the control of the patron

RESERVATIONS R5.00 per item (Non-refundable)

Reservation fees do not apply to items in indigenous languages other than Xhosa

Lost/unusably damaged material: Cost Price of item (rounded down to the nearest 10 cents)
Minor damage excluding CD/DVD cases: R21.00 per item
Damage to CD/DVD cases: R11.00 per item

LIBRARY CARDS
Replacement of lost computer membership card: R16.00 per card
Replacement of lost manual membership card: R3.00 per card
Persons living outside the City of Cape Town both adult and juvenile:
R140.00 p.a. per member (Scholars/students studying in the metropolitan area with proof of studentship – no charge)
Persons temporarily living in the metropolitan area both adult and juvenile:
R70.00 per book (max. 3 books)

LIBRARY HALLS
(Excluding Milnerton Library Lecture Theatre and Central Library Seminar Rooms)
Library Halls are not to be used for social (e.g. celebrations of birthdays), political (e.g. rallies) or religious (e.g. church services) events. Their primary purpose is to provide a venue for cultural or community events.

There is no charge for official use by City Departments.

Councillors are allowed 2 free meetings per month.

Proof of the purpose of the meeting (notice, letter, media release) has to be supplied one week prior to the letting.

Business/commercial organizations: R130.00 per session *
Committee Room
(Bellville, Pinelands & Somerset West Libraries): R75.00 per session *
Cultural/community organizations: Free (excluding kitchen facilities)
Use of kitchen (where available): R60.00 per session *
